From the word pelado, meaning "peeled", "plucked" or "bald"... Here in Puerto Rico, pelao means "broke", or without money.
Used in a sentence:
"Oye, vamos a janguear hoy! Ya se acabó el semestre!
"Acho mano, no puedo, estoy pelao/pelá"
